Black Crowes Roar Back

By calling their sixth and latest album Lions, the Crowes hoped to come from a position of strength.

However, there's little in the way of new territory covered on this 13-track collection, in stores Tuesday.

The group continue to sound like early-'70s rockers, and given they most recently got off tour with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, that shouldn't come as a big surprise.

Working with veteran producer Don Was at an old Yiddish musical theatre in New York City's Lower East Side, the album does sound pretty good even if all the songs don't entirely measure up.

Among the highlights are the ballsy rocker Come On, the pretty, acoustic numbers Losing My Mind, Soul Singing and Miracle To Me, and the more psychedelic and funky Greasy Grass River and Young Man, Old Man.

The Black Crowes play the Molson Amphitheatre on May 22 on the so-called Tour Of Brotherly Love with Oasis and Spacehog.

Let the games begin!
