The Black Crowes contributed a B-side to the CD "Hempilation",
which is a CD to promote the cause to make Marijuana legal. The Crowes are not a
newcomer to this
cause, as they played in the Atlanta Pot Festival as early as 1992. Some liner
notes concerning the Crowes:
The first band to join Hempilation was
The Black Crowes. One day I was watching their long-form video, "Who
Killed That Bird Out On Your Window Sill?" and right in the middle of it I
heard them singing in the backround, "Everybody must get stoned." It was about
20 seconds of Bob Dylan's 1966 Classic, "Rainy Day Women #12 and 35." A
call placed to the band's management revealed that not only was there a
completed version of the song, but it was the B-side of "Hotel Illness", the
fifth single from 1992's "Southern Harmony and Musical Companion." The band,
who were on the cover of the July '92 High Times, quickly agreed to
donate the track to Hempilation, and with that the project was
essentially born. We can never thank the Crowes enough for their support.
Without them, Hempilation may never have happened.

A small group of artists including Chris Robinson
and Marc Ford of the Black Crowes recorded a session at Conway studios in
late 1993 or 1994 and it was named Sweet Pickle Salad by Chris.
Supposedly five songs were recorded there but studio versions of other Crowes
songs may have been added on the recording. Artists who contributed to Sweet
Pickle Salad included:
- Chris Robinson, lead vocals, Black Crowes
- Marc Ford, guitar, Black Crowes
- Craig Ross, guitar, Lenny Kravitz band
- Jimmy Ashhurst, base guitar, JuJu Hound
- Andy Sturmer, drums, The Jellyfish
- Roger Manning, keyboards, The Jellyfish
And someone on flute :-)
The San Francisco Chronicle ran a small clip about the
temporary band February 20th, 1994; it appears below:
The San Francisco Chronicle, FEBRUARY 20, 1994
Andy Sturmer, singer-percussionist of Jellyfish,
reports that the band is writing songs for the next 'Fish album. He adds that
he's been spending a lot of time with the Black Crowes, adding vocals and
extra drums to that band's current recording sessions. Recently, Sturmer
completed work on an album by Sweet Pickle Salad -- his informal group with
singer-keyboardist Roger Manning of Jellyfish, singer Chris Robinson and
guitarist Mark Ford of the Crowes, and guitarist Craig Ross of Lenny Kravitz's
band. ''I'm sure it'll be released some day. It's like Crosby, Stills & Nash
meets Pink Floyd. Every song is like 14 minutes long with heavy jamming.''

Pickin' On The Black Crowes
The music of the well-loved but critically
underappreciated Southern rock band the Black Crowes provides perfect material
for bluegrass covers. This album begins with a version of the Robinson brothers'
"Jealous Again," which comes off like an old-time, rip-roaring barnburner.
"Thorn in My Pride" seems like a movie-worthy reprise of the original and "Twice
as Hard" and "Wiser Time" are melancholy, thoughtful, and enchanting versions of
great songs. What really makes this album stand out from other tributes and
other records in the Pickin' On series is that it skillfully applies the best
sounds of bluegrass and country to the Black Crowes, changing the genre but all
the while maintaining the spirit of the original.
