i just listened to 3 and the beast for the first time in a long time and it sounded still fresh and had a great punch to it. the bass sounded awesome! do you know if it was recorded in analog and what format?

To be honest, I don't really know much about the recording details for that record. I do know that the majority of '3 And The Beast' was recorded at Dug Deep Studios, in New Jersey. Here's an article from a few years ago describing the equipment at Dug Deep, the answer might be in there, if you're curious enough to read through it!

I like the last two tracks too. Not exactly what I roll with these days, but that's some pretty good riff rock. Unique guitar parts, very good rhythm section. Nice production to get all the grit out of the guitars. Rock and roll.

The album is up on iTunes - http://bit.ly/sweetfist

And they're giving away "Flashlight" on their iLike page - http://www.ilike.com/artist/super+400

So excited that people are excited about this album! They were great at Rev Hall and played so many tunes from "Sweet Fist." There are contests on Melodic.net and altsounds.com to win signed copies, too.

The "Flashlight" video is in the MTV library-- I'm shocked. Not sure what channel it will be airing on (VH1 Classic, MTV proper, MTVU, etc.). But it's way cool that it has arrived. That and Rose Hlll Drive's "Sneak Out" are the two most surprising videos in the Viacom catalog as of late.

I really like Flashlight, but I'm curious why Lori sang lead on it, and why it's the single. Not knowing who the band is beforehand, to the unfamiliar, the video/song almost would almost sound like Luscious Jackson-ish, i.e. a female-fronted poppy band. Is that intentional for more marketability or something?

No, I work at Viacom and sometimes have to QC ("quality control", aka the less-glamorous "watch") new/incoming videos that are digitally sent to the facility (21st century-style, not on tape), and Flashlight happened to be one of them-- along with a new Creed video [puke]. Not sure if the video is officially viewable/online yet. But I think the videos eventually end up on a tape reel with other videos for archival purposes (and when the digital method doesn't work too well, which is fairly often). Same thing happened with RHD's Sneak Out, but it was already online when it got to MTV Inc.

Someone asked that in the webchat thing a few weeks ago. They said that it was a song she wrote, and for various reasons Kenny thought she should try to sing it. Also, they both thought it was out of his range. It seemed like it wasn't anything they really thought out - just a spur of the moment kind of thing.

To me, it sounds like the single on the album - in that it is a bit poppier than the rest of the album.

ok thanks booah
Lori did sing lead on another song called "You Can Go" that was never released on an official album.
It also was kind of up beat.
Looking forward to seeing the video.

I like the way she sings. Moreso than the guy. I think she did a terrific job on that song.

Thanks for the scoop, booah. I never really knew how the music video distribution stuff works these days. I hope that means the video will be available online, somewhere, soon.

Yep. One bit of info I'd add is that the song was written by Lori just a couple of days before going into the studio, because they hadn't yet written a straight-up pop song for the album.

I love the tune, it's vintage Super 400, and might be their hookiest chorus in the past decade-plus. Take away Lori's vocals and the Jackson-5-ish chorus, and you've got a song that's really not terribly far removed from what they've been doing for years.

I agree about the music, it's 400-tastic. I do dig the song, I was just pondering what impression outsiders would get, esp. if it actually airs on TV (w/videos being a dying art left largely to shilling teenybopper faux country crossover pop drivel and "R&B" and "rap"). Then again, I don't really give a crap what outsiders think.

And I don't think the vocals would be hard for Kenny to tackle if he sang it an octave lower or something, if they were gonna try it w/him. He seems to have a pretty adaptable voice. Either way, I'm psyched to check out the new stuff, haven't listened to it online yet, or bought it yet. I wanted to actually pay for it (I'm sure I won't only like one song and curse its purchase).

I think I've written (and raved) about every Super 400 release prior to this one but haven't heard this one yet. Didn't get sent an advance and have been too broke to order one but will soon and then get some more ink out there for these folks. Really dig this band and have continued to champion them for years. Very much looking forward to hearing the new joint.

I'll post what I did on anoter site and am curious to see Talks response:

If the Crowes put out a Britney Spears Teen music video like that, Talk would fucking hang them, but with these guys its ok. I have caught them twice at a bar in Worcester, and they are better than that video shows, really. I really liked them live, but that video is awful. It's probably an attempt to make it big one last time selling to teens, but fuck, thats not what this band is live. Wish em the best of luck because they rocked the two times I have seen them.

Just an observation Talk. Dont get all heated and defensive. But really...

(I'll post my response here and on the other site, just for you, nuglet)

That's very cool that you like them live. They're playing Ralph's again in a couple of weeks, I'll be there. You should go.

Anyway, I'm biased, but I give this band a pass for making a flashy, Hollywood-slick video because they've been an independent band for over ten years, self-financing their own albums and tours. Just the fact that they have a shot at reaching a much wider audience at this point in their career is fucking amazing, and beats some major odds.

Somebody just put up the ducats for them to record a kickass album at Ardent Studios, on 2-inch tape, which ain't cheap by any stretch. Somebody decided that this song was good enough to bring in an up-and-coming, hotshot video director from a production company that works with some of the biggest names in modern popular music. What's the band gonna do, say "NO, you must choose a single that's got thick, bombastic riffs and rocks hard, most accurately reflects our live shows, AND the video can NOT appeal to a younger demographic in any way, instead appealing primarily to middle-aged men from Worcester?" It's not like somebody else wrote them a song and forced them to make a video that they didn't want to make. It all just fell into place, really.

Most importantly, I'm in the video, so that fact ALONE makes it, by default, goddamned brilliant. If it ends up on one of the VH1 or MTV channels, I'll be famous and you'll be tongue-kissing my ass top to bottom just to get some attention from me, and I'll be sipping champagne with P-Diddy and Lady Gaga at parties in the Hamptons.

It's funny, I was actually waiting to see your review! I'm a little irked that you didn't get a copy; I'll make sure you get one, and soon. You've been a friend to and fan of the band for years and now that the band lets the label and promo peeps take care of all the business of the music business, somebody obviously dropped the ball by leaving you off of the advance copy list. I hope you dig it, and I think you will. Oh, and you may or may not have noticed, but they had a San Fran date scheduled, then canceled, over the summer...rumor has it, they will be heading out west later in the fall, so stay tuned, hopefully you'll get to see 'em in action.

I finally got this album and gave it a listen today. It is pretty kickass, i think they did a great job. it was recorded so well, the tones are really sweet on here. It must be because of the analog recording. Lot of good riffs here, i don't know which ones will be my favorites but I feel the earth move was a nice surprise, didn't think they would cover that one.
I'd definitely recommend it, and most people here would probably dig it too!
